Restoring an icon: Zürcherhof – A glimpse into its transformation
Through insightful interviews with Hans Kessler, Construction Manager, and Martina Schürmann, Key Account Manager, the documentary explores both the architectural revival and the modernisation efforts that blend heritage with innovation. From the intricate “Jugendstil” details to newly designed spaces for business and leisure, the film highlights how PSP Swiss Property has successfully fused the building's historical elegance with modern functionality.
During the renovation, every effort was made to preserve the historically significant features that define Zürcherhof’s unique character. This applied not only to the facade but also to the internal structure, which was restored to reflect its original architectural concept. Due to heritage protection regulations, external insulation was not possible. However, through innovative methods such as internal insulation plaster, insulated windows, a newly insulated roof, and efficient cooling systems in the upper floors, energy consumption is expected to be reduced by at least 30%, resulting in an annual CO2 reduction of over 15 tons.
Bringing back the splendor
In the interview, Hans Kessler explains that with great dedication and respect for history, the original charm of this significant building has been restored. Old photographs and historical documents served as the basis for reconstructing the facade in detail, bringing back the authentic character of the Zürcherhof.
As a listed building, Zürcherhof is now well-prepared for the future while remaining deeply rooted in its rich past.
"The Zürcherhof has regained its soul."
- Hans Kessler, Construction Manager
Modernizing for today
Martina Schürmann emphasizes the premium office spaces spanning the first to sixth floors, along with the rooftop terrace, accessible to all tenants, which further enhances the overall working environment.
While the restoration has preserved the historic charm of the building, modern facilities such as a state-of-the-art eye clinic have been introduced, adding a new layer of functionality. The ground floor further enhances its appeal with a diverse range of retailers, including existing tenants Burri Optik, Starbucks, as well as the Travelhouse travel agency, offering convenience and variety to tenants and visitors alike.
"We are delighted to see that existing tenants have returned to the renovated location."
- Martina Schürmann, Key Account Manager
